When purchasing a diamond, one of the most commonly discussed attributes is its carat weight. A diamond's weight is measured in carats, with one carat being equal to 100 points. This means that a 3/4-carat diamond is also referred to as a 75-point diamond. While carat weight is often a significant factor in determining the value of a diamond, it is important to understand that size alone does not determine a diamond's quality or value.

Carat Definition: What Is a Carat?

While many confuse carat as a measurement of physical size, it is actually a measurement of weight used to describe diamonds and other gemstones. One carat equals 0.2 grams, about the same weight as a paperclip.  

To understand what diamond carat measures, it’s helpful to know the origins of the carat system. It began with carob seeds that early gem traders used as small, uniform counterweights to their balance scales. At that time, gemstone measurement varied internationally; there was no standard. It wasn’t until 1913 that the world adopted the modern metric carat. Now, a carat weighs the same in every corner of the globe.  

As one of the four factors that describe and determine a diamond’s quality and value, carat should not be confused with ‘karat,’ a unit used to measure the purity of gold.

How Big is a Carat?

A carat is synonymous with weight, not the size of a diamond. For example, a one-carat round diamond typically measures around 6.4mm. Shape, cut, and depth also play a role in determining how big a carat appears.

Carat Weight vs. Diamond Value

Larger diamonds are generally more valuable, but carat weight should not be the only consideration when purchasing a diamond. The brilliance of a diamond, which refers to how well it reflects light, is influenced by its cut, clarity, and color grades. A smaller diamond with excellent clarity, color, and cut can often have more brilliance and sparkle than a larger diamond with lower quality in these areas.

The Impact of Other Diamond Attributes

It’s essential to keep in mind that two diamonds with the same carat weight can have very different prices depending on their cut, clarity, and color. For example, a 1-carat diamond with high clarity, color, and cut quality will generally be more expensive than a 1-carat diamond with lower grades in those categories.While carat weight is often associated with the physical size of the diamond, it’s the combination of all attributes—cut, color, clarity, and carat weight—that ultimately defines the overall value and beauty of the diamond. We want you to love your MILANJ Diamonds purchase. That’s why we offer complimentary 30-day returns on eligible U.S. orders, including free return shipping via FedEx. If you're not fully satisfied, simply initiate your return within 30 days of the ship date.

All items must be returned in original, unworn condition with any accompanying documentation, including diamond certificates (a $100 replacement fee applies if missing). Items that have been engraved, resized, or altered by another jeweler cannot be returned.

Returns must be approved in advance and shipped within 7 days of receiving your return label. Returns without prior authorization or showing signs of wear will not be accepted.

Most eligible items are refunded to the original payment method. Special orders and custom designs may qualify for store credit only, as noted at the time of purchase.
