Diamonds maybe a girl's best friend, but they are so much more. N, bot only is a diamond the symbol of ones love for anotherut in history and lore, a diamond was thought to make one invincible.Many would wear a diamond to ward off evil. In times of battle, a diamond was worn as a symbol of courage. One story even tells of Cupid's arrows being tipped in diamonds.
The word "diamond" comes from the Greek word "adamas", meaning unconquerable, further suggesting the association with triumph and eternal love.
Come all the way forward to 1477,August, and Mary of Burgundy received the first diamond as an engagement ring,or "betrothal" ring, from Archduke Maximillian of Austria.
Five hundred thirty-nine years ago today, and we still ask for ones hand and heart the very same way, with but one object- a diamond.
